My name is Jonathan...
…I am a storyteller.
Back in 2013, I started Life by Pictures to bring my love for creativity to life. Starting with family portraits I quickly molded myself into a multi-faceted creative capturing children, weddings, events, corporate marketing, head shots and honestly anything that I could capture, I would. In 2016 I started to pursue video and how I could use that to tell stories. I quickly fell in love with documenting all that I could and giving a different perspective with my style of capturing. Now with photo and video in my arsenal, I started booking more clients and at the same time working on personal projects in addition to every day life.
In 2018 I started to get burnt out.
From all the different styles and projects I felt like I was being pulled in so many directions, burning the candle at both ends. Focusing on all the “you must do this to be successful” books and articles, I lost my way. I had taken what I had enjoyed with my creativity and made it into a chore that was no longer exciting. I knew I needed to do something, hit the reset button if you will.
I fell off the radar and spent some time getting back to the roots of why I love capturing moments. The joy I have in knowing I told a story from a new perspective and knowing that I exceeded my clients expectations. I found that I needed to be more selective in my projects to be more engaged and involved in the creative process.
I started to set boundaries for myself and all of a sudden the spark was back! The projects I was working on, though fewer, were much more satisfying. I allowed time for me to just go out and shoot, photo and video, with no real initial purpose. Capturing life as it happens and helping tell the story of the situation. I changed my job title from photographer or videographer to “storyteller”. In the end, that is why I started Life by Pictures; to tell stories by capturing life moments.
As a part of this “refresh” I cleaned up social media and my website and will be more consistent and focused on what I share. In a world of oversharing I don’t want to be a part of the problem but rather provide more intentional and useful content. The blog will be updated regularly with things that are going on from sessions to random thoughts and ideas about photography, video or just life (don’t worry I won’t get too deep).
I recently spent some time with my good friend and photographer Nikki Ault to capture some new head shots and marketing photos. I wanted to show a more relaxed and natural me, knowing that I am no longer doing things a conventional way but doing things the way I believe they should be done, the way that started the passion. I have included some of my favorites throughout this post.
My mantra for 2019 is that there is no growth in comfort, so not only just embrace discomfort but I will pursue it. I’m going to come out of my shell and be more open with my thoughts and in all ways just be more of me!
